Spiral Talk & Interview with KPFA's Linda Khoury

In Spiral: Trapped in the Forever War, award-winning journalist Mark Danner offers readers a shrewd analysis of why America's War on Terror has persisted for well over a decade and why it seems to have no end in sight. In a talk and subsequent interview with KPFA's Linda Khoury on July 13, 2016 at Berkeley's Hillside Club, Danner describes the ways in which the terrorist attacks of 9/11 have led America into a perpetual and continuously widening war that has put the country in an endless "state of exception."

Mark Danner and Mitch Jesenich on KPFA's "Letters & Politics"

The massacre in an Orlando gay nightclub has focused presidential candidates back onto the so-called War on Terrorism or “the new face of the war on terror.”  This war is now in its fifteenth year and what at one time seemed to be exceptional is now the normal.

KPFA's Mitch Jesenich leads a conversation with veteran journalist Mark Danner, who argues in his book "Spiral: Trapped in the Forever War," that the 15-year long war on terror appears to have no end in sight. Fear has created what Danner calls the sense of “permanent emergency” among the American public and administration alike in keeping the wars in the Middle East percolating.

Journalism as a 21st Century Career

English majors hear a lot of dire statements about the less-than-abundant job prospects awaiting them after graduation, but many remain hopeful about their futures despite these nerve-wracking warnings. Some are interested in going into journalism, a field that seems particularly risky to enter in the digital age. At a recent Berkeley Connect in English event, Professor Mark Danner spoke with students about his experiences as a journalist and academic, and delivered a welcome message: despite the uncertainty involved in pursuing a career in an industry that is very much in flux, its not entirely hopeless!

Double Blind

When Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi, the Al Qaeda terrorist with a $25 million bounty on his head, decided to show to the world videotapes of the planning and execution of his terror attacks, he delivered them to Michael Ware. Ware, a reporter for Time magazine and CNN, brought the grisly footage to the world’s attention, making it clear that for the U.S. any victory in Iraq was very far off.

At the 2015 Telluride Film Festival, Ware and co-director Bill Guttentag spoke with Mark Danner about the film.
