Jonathan Schell's The Real War
Mark Danner wrote the introduction to Jonathan Schell's "The Real War." Schell was an eyewitness to the course and consequences of one of the largest attacks on American troops during the Vietnam in Ben Suc. Danner's introduction was adapted from a speech he gave at Shell's memorial in 2016 at the Asian Society in New York. You can watch his speech and read the transcript of it here.

In this book, Schell not only recounts the atrocities of war in great detail, but he also tries to find answers to questions about why the United States launched the war in Vietnam and why it lost. His account is one of the most moving testimonies about the war in the modern literary canon.
